My name is Maureen McGurk and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor.  As a psychotherapist experienced in counseling for anxiety disorders, I can help you begin to recognize and change thought patterns and behaviors that lead to troublesome feelings.

Are you extremely worried about everything in your life, even if there is little or no reason to worry? Are you very anxious about just getting through the day? Are you afraid that everything will always go badly?  I provide counseling for anxiety that will help lessen those painful thoughts and emotions.

Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences at times. Many people feel anxious, or nervous, when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision. Anxiety disorders, however, are different. They can cause such distress that it interferes with a person’s ability to lead a normal life.

There are many types of anxiety disorders that include panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder.

All of us worry about things like health, money, or family problems. But people with a generalized anxiety disorder are extremely worried about these and many other things, even when there is little or no reason to worry about them.

What are some signs and symptoms of a generalized anxiety disorder?

  • Worry very much about everyday things
  • Have trouble controlling their constant worries
  • Know that they worry much more than they should
  • Not be able to relax
  • Have a hard time concentrating
  • Be easily startled
  • Have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Feel tired all the time
  • Have headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches, or unexplained pains
  • Have a hard time swallowing
  • Tremble or twitch
  • Be irritable, sweat a lot, and feel light-headed or out of breath
  • Have to go to the bathroom a lot (National Institute of Mental Health)

I can help you recover from those painful emotions by examining the thought processes that lead to uncomfortable and distressing feelings and behaviors.  With individual therapy for anxiety, we can begin uncover the issues that are causing the worry and fear while simultaneously developing and practicing healthy coping behaviors.

Individual therapy for anxiety is usually once a week.  All therapy is CONFIDENTIAL.
